Threads

As part of a final project my senior year of design school, I was tasked with creating a book to house all my writings from the course. It would serve not only as a documentation of my last semester, but also as a guide and encouragement to be passed down to another student.

Illustrator and InDesign. All photos are not mine and are for conceptual purposes only.

I feel as though the forward of the book does a great job at describing the purpose of this piece and how I meant for it to be consumed:

“This book is structured in a way very similar to that of a diary, with each writing preceded by a discussion prompt that I was given throughout the semester. After each writing section are several pages that I utilized as spaces for visual exploration—whether it’s typographic layouts, photos I thought were beautiful, or other spread ideas that I felt like documenting, these pages serve as a background fabric and texture behind my writings. Some of them feel directly connected, and others don’t.

The title of this project is Threads, which ties back to the aforementioned book structure. These writings are connected in the sense that they are all my thoughts, but other than that, they’re honestly kind of random. They started to feel like separate threads weaving together to create something; what that is, I’m still not quite sure of.

As you read through the following pages, feel free to compare your own thoughts to mine and draw your own conclusions. Use the dotted grid pages at the end of each section to document any ideas that may arise. I hope this book can serve both as a document of my time at Anderson University and as an encouragement for the student who gets it next.

Life after college can be daunting, but I hope that knowing someone else has been in your shoes—just as scared and excited—can give you a little bit of comfort through all of it.”
